Thanks to you, our May food drive reached more than four times its goal

The results have been tallied and we’re excited to announce that our “1000 Meals a Day in May” food drive far exceeded its 31,000-meal goal.

Thanks to the generosity of our customers, associates, community members and local businesses, the drive collected food and cash donations equivalent to 144,514 meals for people in our area who struggle to get enough to eat.

First Financial banking centers in Indiana and Illinois received a total of 9,409 non-perishable food items weighing 8,205 pounds. Cash donations totaled $34,419, which includes a corporate contribution from First Financial.

All donations are being distributed in the county where they were made. Bank associates in each county in our service area selected a local nonprofit organization that feeds the hungry to receive the food and funds collected

This year we held a friendly competition among associates to boost contributions. In three counties in both Indiana and Illinois, the banking centers with the highest percentage increase in donations over our previous food drive earned an additional corporate contribution for their chosen organizations. In Indiana, Putnam County took first place, followed by Daviess County in second and Clay County in third. In Illinois, Clark County came in first with Champaign County, second, and Jasper County, third.

Because donations to hunger relief organizations decline after the holiday season, the bank held the drive in May to help restock the shelves at foodbanks, food pantries and soup kitchens. The need is especially great during the summer, when kids who depend on school meal programs may not have access to adequate food.

We’re grateful to be a part of communities where so many people are willing to share their blessings with neighbors in need. We couldn’t have achieved these results without you. Thank you!

Meal Math: How results were calculated

Food banks and other hunger relief organizations use these benchmarks for converting dollars and pounds of food to meals:

  • To convert pounds of food to meals, we used the U.S. Department of Agriculture standard, which defines a meal as 1.2 pounds of food.
  • To convert dollars to meals, we used the average number of meals a U.S. food bank can provide for each dollar donated. On average, $1 will purchase four meals.
